02am is an 4 track ep by the young producer hekkla from eindhoven in the netherlands. the first track is sunset strip , a slowly build house track that moves like the last waves of heat at the end of a hot summers day, walking home feeling satisfied, all ready for the night. saturday morning sentimentality is a hard to pinpoint track that sounds like the bastard son of a trio between the melancholic side of cyndi lauper, alphaville and the echoes of a cheesy saturday morning cartoon theme song from the late 80 s. on the other side memories of tau ceti feels like tumbling into space with only the memories left of a good time on an alien world, accelerating faster and faster but still enjoying it, even though you know that the vacuum of space will eventually kill you. finishing with the hardest track no math , because, boys and girls, it s no math... hand stamped artwork by frank koedood.

rediscovered 80’s british acid house gem ‘cortina kidz’ recently made a serious impact on andy butler’s mr. intl with remixes from factory floor and juan maclean & tim sweeney. hot on the heels, moscow’s lipelis’ steps in to remix with striking results. pitchfork enthused of the recent reissue being “a chilly acid-house track operating the influence of both soft cell and the specials,’ xlr8r as “drenched in dark and sleazy overtones, the track encapsulates a downtrodden time in london”, while ransom note noted “cortina kidz is more than just an old skool oddity- it s a banger that s stood the test of time”. originally recorded on london’s stoke newington road in 1987, produced by a young tim brinkhurst ahead of his imminent record deal with virgin records with his band soho, and long before his current role as manager of mercury prize winners, young fathers, ‘cortina kidz’ remained undiscovered and the eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. leonid lipelis explains that “since it’s a reissue of a relatively unknown record it gave me a certain freedom of expression (when it’s something well known and classic you re likely to produce something more serious). i came up with more of a pop song, structured with a vocoder for the main version and had fun playing with vocal samples for the dub mix, paying homage to the 80s sound in both.- lipelis’ recent release on lies records has gained him support from four tet to dimitri from paris. he also runs a side project for hardware jams called tmo and co-runs low budget family records.

the berlin-based producer is kicking off his label with a four-track single. while he is perhaps not as name-checked as some of the hardware hawking house heads of modern times, arttu snellman has been working hard at gritty box jams for a good few years now. he first appeared under his arttu guise in 2011 with the nuclear funk and fear diluted singles on royal oak and philpot respectively, and then proceeded to wheel out tunes for 4 lux and chiwax over the ensuing years. prior to the tough-edged pump of his current ventures, you could find snellman indulging in a more laptop-centric kind of practice under the name lump. this more minimalistic, glitchy house fodder could be found on labels such as karloff, morris/audio and süd electronic amongst many others. back in the here and now though, arttu was last spotted on clone jack for daze earlier this year with the rave dogz 12”, and next up he’s taking matters into his own hands. existing fans of arttu will be more than pleased with the heavyweight, crunchy tackle that inhabits cyblo01. this is dynamic business with same heft found on previous releases from snellman, mixed in with the cheeky flair that has always marked his productions out in a crowded marketplace.

sing with me: much in the same vein of the mannheim house sound made popular by artists like johnny d, nick curly, christian burkhardt etc. bretts gives us a deep but driving track centered around an african boy singing. brett chops the sample up to create a choir of ethereal voices to support the boys singing. as the track progresses it takes a left turn into weirdville through some dramatic synth tweaks & sweeps. this track is perfect for anyone who likes to dance standing up, with their head down and first firmly in the air. speaking japanese: many people will tell you learning to speak japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and theyre right. lucky for you, brett has done all the work by translating his message into sound. the core inspiration for this track is based on a sample from a song by get physical owner and artist mandy. they were kind enough to let brett use the sample and run wild with it. the result is 8 minutes and 12 seconds of over driven 909s, rolling bass lines and a pad so thick you need a fork to eat it. all of this keeps the calm while frantic chatter and out of this world fxs take you to a japanese after party somewhere in shibuya.

elgian in origin, igor vicente and dka join forces to create two monster tracks for their haus boo ep on hot creations. championed by jamie jones, lee foss and richy ahmed it arrives hot on the heels of hot creations’s paradise events series announcement for ibiza 2016, this is music made for those heady nights on the dc10 terrace. on the a-side is haus boo which the guys created after being inspired by the all time classic the house master boyz and the rude boy of house house nation . taking the release into a much darker realm is shady with a seriously addictive beat, endless high-hats and relentless snares. infatuated with music from a young age, igor vicente founded the belgian wildfamily parties in which jamie jones, seth troxler, dinky and matthew styles among others have all played. some years later he formed one half of ultrasone, and has released on get physical, mobilee and hot creations multiple times. these days you can catch him playing at one of his two residencies in belgium, cafe d anvers and fuse, and founding the label state of flow. dka has his roots firmly placed in the house music scene and has taken his sounds all over europe, whilst releasing on get physical music, mobilee records and play label records to name just a few.
